Vietnam current labor force situation: Demand – Supply Mismatch

Although Vietnam has been recognized as a country with abundant labor resources, backed by the young population. However, many big international organizations in the country still find themselves in difficult situation to recruit a sufficient amount of skillful staffs. Therefore, they lack the necessary resources to expand production activities.
 
Head directors of many talent acquisition agencies have noted a significant mismatch between the skill level of staff and employer demand. The shortage of quality employee is one of the biggest disadvantages of Vietnam’s human resources market.
 
According to a latest research from reputable online recruitment portal, 41 percent of employers had not been able to achieved enough number of highly skilled staff. 
 
In the first three months of 2018, there has been a dramatic increase in the number of employees searching for jobs, which is a rise of 40% compared to last year period. This fact is due to the establishment of new foreign direct invested company
 
The fourth industrial revolution or Technology 4.0 has led to a conversion trend in different area of the human resources market, especially in technology and manufacturing. As a result, there are also higher demand for new occupations in the job market such as data analysis, engineering and automation. At this rate, Vietnamese has been lagged behind the employers’ demand for new quality roles. 
 
According to Chris Havey, professional recruiter for IT fileds in Vietjam, his latest research has solved that one of the main challenge to hire IT employee is the lack of appropriate language and problem solving skills. It is also showed that IT engineers also recognized their weaknesses, how their limited proficiency of English and related experiences has made them underqualified for a job with attractive remuneration package.
 
Representative of the Vietnam National University of Forestry, Mr Tran Van Hung, told the press that many firms in the area of Ho Chi Minh City is still in the situation of continuously looking for qualified candidates. Therefore, many economics and human resources experts has expressed serious concern about the lack of competence due to the fact that a large amount of money has been poured into high-tech industries.
 
According to professor Vu Dinh Thanh, rector of HCM City University of Technology, many education and training institutes have been offering similar training and vocational courses. However, these courses have not been divided into various skill levels, not meeting the demand of both employers and employees.
 
The head of the Employment Department, belonging to the Ministri of of Labour, Invalids, and Social Affairs, Dr Le Kim Dung, also highlighted that there is also a lack of complete database on the human resources market and disconnection between different cities and provinces across Vietnam. The current situation has led to incorrect forecasts and analysis about the overall human resources market, thus negatively affecting socio-economic policies.
